PP&L Electric Giving Away Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs

PP&L, one of our regional electric suppliers here in Lancaster County, PA has announced a free lightbulb giveaway including two "CFLs" or compact fluorescent lightbulbs.  These energy-efficient bulbs use up to 75% less energy than traditional (old-fashioned?) lightbulbs and last many years longer.  PP&L is promoting it's new website look and it's energy analyzer for residential customers through this promotion.

While being a nice concept, you can buy these bulbs for a couple of dollars each at Home Depot.  Prices have come way down and they're available everywhere.

I'm not horribly impressed with the giveaway idea and of course I absolutely HATE being asked to give personal data about my home on the internet (secure or not).  On the other hand, there might be some internet-savvy customers out there who will benefit from the home analyzer and have 2 extra bulbs to use in their house.  It's certainly better than nothing.

Since I'm well on my way to retrofitting my entire house to CFLs, I think I'll pass on PP&L's giveaway.  Now, if they promised to pay a month of my utility bill...

Comments

PP&L has been one of the top rated utilities in the east in customer service for some years.  Having said that, I agree that a couple of light bulbs would not be enough to make me part with my personal info (although they have it anyway...)

Jeff, I give them credit for trying, too bad they are probably those 2500K bulbs. I don't care for the color.

What am I missing that all these companies are doing something "green this week"?

Jeff, I am familiar with this electric company, but I think it is nice that they are trying to help in their own way!!

I'm using CFL's in my house.  The only thing is that the light isn't all that flattering - and they don't work with dimmers.  Still, I think it's important do whatever it takes to reduce energy use.  Still, I'd rather give money to Home Depot than personal information to our local electric company.

Jeff-  The jury is still not in with regards to health issues with the CFLs. I use Full Spectrum, the bulbs last for years, save electricity and do not cause any mood swings or depression and they give outdoor daylight light, especially good for your eyes and reading. We switched our office over to the Full Spectrum a year and a half ago. Katerina

Home Depot and Lowes about once a month have a sale on these bulbs for .99, just watch for them and they do work great!

Patricia - dimmer-friendly CFLs are out there.  I can get you a contact if you like!

Katerina - CFLs use the same ballast technology that's been around for 50 years - I'm sure both options have merit.

Todd - there you go!  I just bought a batch of replacements for my R-floods in my kitchen at HD for $2.50 each - actually cheaper than the traditional flood!
